In February we will be celebrating our 5^th anniversary in Burundi, how cool is that! This is a wonderful milestone for us personally as we have experienced how God have provided for our every need during our stay in Burundi. Thank you Lord for your hand of favor upon us.
 
Although we are in good health, Diane and I have been challenged on the mission field. To mention a few are the culture, language, being away from family and friends and also the pace at which life happens in Burundi.
 
Every time we visit SA it takes me a few weeks to adjust to the fast pace and soon as we have “climatised” we return to the slower pace of Burundi, which bring along the experiences of a host of frustrations.
 
Tim Keller in his book, King’s Cross, he makes the point that we cannot control what happens to us but we can control our “response” to what happens to us. Needless to say that we appreciate God’s grace in this area, as we only sometimes find victory in our responses. So the narrative of our lives continue as the maker uses what happens to us to shape and change our character into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
 
Here are a few highlights over the last few months.
 
Veritas…
Module 2 had been completed with the Ngozi and Kirundo groups. During the next 6 months we will continue to facilitate the training of Module 3 in Gitega and Rutana provinces.

One facilitator, John Baptist have initiated his own group of 17 leaders from different church denominations. Here is a pic where we visited his group and distributed Kirundi Bible commentaries.


Ps Jean Marie Vianey, who is a full time pastor, part time electronics technician, has a passion for training using Veritas material. After a period of training with me in the North, we released Jean Marie as a facilitator to pioneer his own Module 1 group of 15 pastors.
 
We have another 3 facilitators who are training their own groups. These are the people who have proved themselves faithful to train according to 2 Tim 2:2. We are committed to supporting and strengthening these facilitators who will continue the training of Veritas College into the remainder of the country.
 
Translation of Module 3 have been completed and Module 4 will commence later this year. We want to extend a big Thank you to ACAT for providing the funds to continue the translation of Module 4 into Kirundi. As well as for the financial support for the distribution of Kirundi Bible commentaries to the participants.

The next month is focused on our Veritas College International Sub-Saharan Africa meeting, which will be held in Pretoria during the last week of September. This will be a time of fellowship with staff from all over Africa and a re-focusing on our calling with Veritas.
 
Compassion Fund…
Diane continued to support the family of John Bosco who suffers from anemia. The poor child has been hospitalized twice this year for blood transfusions. To assist with his nutrition levels, Diane supplies premixed porridges for breakfast and also a full meal to the whole family every day. Diane have connected with a local NPO who distributes prepacked meal portions which consists of rice and soya. They receive containers of the food from an organization in the US, Feed my Starving Children. The interventions are paying off as John Bosco have been growing and increasing body mass.

What a privilege it is to be the hands and feet of Jesus, sowing His compassion with passion. This next pick Diane had distributed about 200 pairs of sandals, copy books, pens, balls etc to children in a remote village in Gitega.


Development…
We sent an invitation to ACAT to come and present the 1st ACAT Leadership Skills to Address Poverty, also presented by the leadership of ACAT (a personal cherry on the cake). I was convinced that this request was a God idea. However what transpired over the last 6 months was nothing short of seeing God’s miraculous hand of provision. We were witnessing how God was using the course to address some 50 leaders from 7 nations, representing 12 diffident church denominations from 25 different local churches. The participants also included business leaders and other Non Government organizations.

Our theme was Ps 127:1 "Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain."
 
During the training, ACAT donated $7000 towards Bibles of which the bulk have been distributed at the training.

-       54 Swahili Bibles

What remains is to say thank you Father God for having Burundi close to your heart, for sending Jesus before us and that we had this privilege Lord Jesus to follow you to Burundi for the work you are busy doing in this nation, which is not God forsaken but Blessed because the most High has not yet said it is over!! Thank you Holy Spirit for your active involvement and presence during the training that you drew close to each one of us and encouraged and sustained us for your service. Now Lord we pray that you will multiply and grow the seeds spiritually and physically sown that you will give increase.
 
Thank you Gerald and Philippa Dededkind for your visit and investment into Burundi, which have resulted in many Kingdom seeds being sown. This was your first visit and for coming to Burundi you had to have faith, for which we commend you.

Our next step will be to host the Implementation and Basic Life Skills course in Burundi. We are targeting the last week of November 2013. ACAT have already provided finance for translating the training material into Kirundi.
 
As I write the final few words to this report and reflecting on how surely God builds His Kingdom, I am both humbled and filled with hope for Burundi. Thank you Lord! Thank you ACAT for your faithfulness in which you have held onto the vision and direction God has given you so many years ago, now is the time to ask the Lord please give us the nations. (Ps 2:8)

Vision 2013… Diane and I have peace to remain in Burundi living out the call from God at least for the next 18 months. We will contiue to use Hauge Skills Development Centre as our base in Gitega from where we contiue to live out our vision 2 Tim 2:2 to GO > SERVE > TEACH in the following spheres: 1. Veritas training Church leaders and equiping them with minitry skills, Building Godly Character and imparting Biblical knowledge for their calling. Remainder of the year we will plan to start Module 3 training in the 4 provinces, and commence the translation of Module 4 into Kirundi. 2. Compassion ministry is Diane's fortei and she loves giving and helping the underpreviliged especially the children of Burundi. She promises to give away all the donations with passion :) 3. Development using the Farming God's Way and the more comprehensive ACAT program to reach more communities with the Gospel of action. We will host the 1st ACAT Implementation and Basic Life Skills course in Burundi. Spiritual Thought… Luk 14:26-27 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” When considering the cost of being a disciple of Jesus, think of what you gain, Jesus Christ, priceless! Prayer Points… Please continue to pray as follow: 1. Peace for Burundi – pray for continued political stability in the country. 2. Pray for Bernice – thank you Lord Bernice have graduated. 3. Pray for us – protection for our health, relationships - that no weapon from the enemy against us will prevail. Also for the ongoing relationships in the local church we connect into. 4. Divine appoints – ask the Holy Spirit to guide us into all divine appointments He has created for us and to discern His words of wisdom. 5. Veritas Training – Thank God for His divine provision, also pray for ongoing provision for the books required. Also pray for the many facilitators now trained, that they may multiply the training into their own churches. 6. ACAT & FGW training – for implementation. God will establish leaders that will hear His call to reach the Active poor in Burundi. 7. Hauge Skills Development Centre – for registration and finance to register a Non Profit association in Burundi. 8. Travel Mercies - we will travel to South Africa for September conferences with Liberty, Veritas and meetings with ACAT. Dear Friends

In this issue of Burundi news you can read about:

You have been an encouragement to us as we work together in the Kingdom of God. Over the last few months we had our share of challenges, which we do not necessarily deal with on a daily basis in South Africa. These challenges include not having water and or electricity and or Internet connection and or fuel for the generator and cars.

When we have an extremely bad day in Gitega we call it a chocolate day! Well during last few months we had a number of CHOCOLATE days!!

We are actually in good cheer and we know that God is on our side and that He continues to be our source of hope and provision. On a number of occasions He gave us assurance and encouragement from His word.

Isa 45:2 “I will go before you and will level the mountains. I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.”

Here are a few highlights over the last few months.

Veritas…

Dawie De Wet and Ivan Skinner both from Veritas College International visited the Veritas work in Burundi during October. The main purpose for their visit was to train 4 groups of facilitators from 9 provinces on how to present and train Module 1 and 2.

The ongoing training of Module 2 had been completed with the Gitega and Rutana groups. During the next 6 months we will continue to facilitate the training in Ngozi and Kirundo. We have been met with such excitement and appreciation in these two towns, with registration of delegates doubling.

I was so touched in Kirundo when we started the Module 2 training, we had two leaders who pledged financial support for the training. Leaders stepping up starting to change their own culture, only the Holy Sprit can work such a 360 degree change in hearts amongst one of the most poorest countries, they understand the biblical principal: “It is more blessed to give than to receive!”

One participant, John Baptist, used to be a teacher in Islam. After a radical conversion to Christianity he committed to serve God as a pastor. He has completed Module 1 and is one the Facilitators trained to continue the Veritas training. We donated to him a white board and markers. His vision is to reach the most rural places in the north to train Church Leaders with the most fundamental skill: How to interpret the Bible. Pastors and leaders understand that due to the massive church growth in Burundi, without fundamental biblical Leadership training the churches are simply not sustainable. As they say one mile wide but a couple of inches deep.

This is Ps Jean Marie Vianey, he is a full time pastor, part time electronics technician who has a passion for training using Veritas material. He currently trains with me in the North. We continually are looking for partners who will be part of the team to continue the training when we exit Burundi.











 

Translation of Module 3 is underway and we should have the first draft during December 2012 for checking. We want to extend a big Thank you to ACAT for providing the funds to continue the translation of Module 3 into Kirundi. They also sponsored 50 Kirundi commentaries and 144 Bibles.

Compassion Fund…

Diane has a great gift of empathy and hence she helps me to see and act on the need around us. Burundi being the 3^rd poorest country, with many orphans and dysfunctional families it becomes very difficult to ignore the major felt need of poverty amongst the people. In most cases we just do not have a clue of how impoverished families are even in urban areas.

Diane responded to God’s leading as she continues to minister to the Children at Full Gospel church every 2^nd Saturday. In particular one child was highlighted to her by the Holy Spirit, to assist and help in any which way she could. What followed was a meeting with the family which lead to her bleak discovery of the condition of their home. The husband works in another country not really visiting or providing for the family. The house was unorganised, no cupboards for clothes, lack of food, lack of bedding, lack of  beds and a general sense of hopelessness. But God had them in mind and Diane intervened by providing beds, clothes, food, teaching ACAT veggie gardens, training FGW on the field and just simply being a help to a family in need.

Also many children have a kind of parasite eating away at their skin on their heads. Diane received a donation to help treat these children with remarkable results. She would train the parents or older children how to administer the medication she bought for them.

On another occasion Diane received a donation of dresses made of pillowcases from the States. Lynda Taylor was very instrumental in raising the support and helpers in the States to sew the dresses for the children. Lynda, Diane and Peter distributed the dresses to the girls and T-shirts for the boys.

Finally Diane prepared for her yearend gift distribution for the children at church as well as to an orphanage in Kirundo. We received special donations from two sources: Higher Ground Church from Illinois, USA and a businessman from Norway. We bought 180 gift hampers to celebrate the ultimate gift God gave mankind, Jesus Christ because He loves us so much. The gifts were received with much excitement and joy!

Development…

At home in Gitega, rather our pit stop every 2^nd week between travels up country, we find the time to continue to invest our efforts into the following community development initiatives:

Farming God’s Way training primarily focussed on establishing home food security. With the help of Aaron, Diane proceeded to host 4 such training seminars since August. To make this program more beneficial we will need to deploy more resources in following up homesteads and encouraging and mentoring people who have already attended the training.

The ACAT training in South Africa has really challenged me personally as to what our role should be in implementing the training we received. What we have learned over the 4 years we have been in Burundi is that dealing with people with a mindset of poverty is a major stronghold.

"My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge..." Hos 4:6...therefore we walk this thin line of not falling into the trap to give because it is just so much easier to give a fish than to teach someone how to catch a fish. We have to be very wise how we approach any community, because when we drive with our vehicles into a very rural village the begging mindset takes over and we have already lost the battle. But if we consider how Jesus coached His disciples in Luke 10, identifying with the people in every way, then I am convinced that our "muzungu" role is not to do, but to train, mentor and support local extension officers to go to their own people, who we brand as the productive poor.

Ps Lambert who attended the training with ACAT in SA is one such example. My role was too help him define his strategy, implementation plan and budget. Over the last few months he had to first conquer his own mindset, placing his dependency and faith on God, which resulted in him penetrating the most rural communities. His "secret" - be one of them, stay with the people in their very primitive homes, eat their very basic food, spend time getting to know them and earning their trust i.e. earning the right to teach them. I received a report from him last week that he started the basic life skills training with 56 people in Karusi province, forming 8 groups in an area where poverty run deep, at least for the time being, because only after one week many are already receiving hope that it is possible for them to break free from this curse of poverty. Truly Jesus Christ came to set the captives free.

Of cause then we have not yet told you about the many other testimonies of Fidelite, Celestine, Zacharia, Freddy.... we give praise to God as His people are taking His hand and walking this journey to free the people of poverty in Burundi. We have special needs to help these heros in Burundi with resources to train and fulfil their calling. Please let us know if you would like to be part of the ACAT development journey in Burundi.

Spiritual Thought…

Often speaking to local church congregations I am saddened to see people in deep poverty. However I am at the same time exited because we really do have good news to tell which not only bring spiritual and emotional hope but breakthrough in our earthly circumstances.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?”  Rom 8:35

The personal challenge is not to become so familiar with the need around me that I harden my heart towards the very people who Jesus wants to reach. Or worse yet become so consumed with my own needs which blinds me to the very people God sends us to. But continually asking and seeking His perspective keeps me in touch with His heart and purposes. With the understanding that through Jesus Christ we are more than conquerors, because He is leading us day by day through the presence of the Holy Spirit and through His Word which is the final and full revelation of God’s love to all mankind.

Prayer Points…

Please continue to pray as follow:

1. Peace for Burundi – pray for continued political stability in the country.

June 2012 News letter - Messengers of Hope

Urakomeye? (Are you all right?)

We write to you this newsletter in a hope that your and our faith may be mutually encouraged by what God is doing in Burundi and in our own lives. God constantly shows us that He is with us and that He is directing our steps to co-inside with His greater vision and purpose for Burundi. We are reminded of Rom 1:17 "The righteous will live by faith" (NIV).

During the last 6 months we have experienced God’s favour unconditionally which has been enveloped with a fragrance of His unlimited mercy, birthing in us a stamina of perseverance for the work we have been called to.

April and May we were in SA for training in Kwazulu-Natal, traveled to Gauteng and the mother city, Cape Town visiting friends and family. We returned in May to Burundi with two short-term visitors, Douglas (Anton’s Dad) and Samantha.

Dad is visiting for 2 months, which is giving us precious time together. He has been instrumental in helping to establish business procedures at the Internet. Samantha is a missionary in transit to DRC.

Feedback on ACAT visit in SA….

Our visit to SA included a 3 week training course with ACAT in Howick. ACAT known as Africa Co-operative Action Trust have been founded in 1979. You can read more about our partner at www.acatkzn.co.za/.

In 2011 Diane attended the same training with 8 Burundians, they have been so impressed by the training that we again, with the financial help of Royal Staple Pty(Ltd), raised 6 Burundians to go with Anton this year. We were accommodated on the property of ACAT in Howick and on weekends were entertained by taking trips to Durban and surrounding midland area. Only one word can explain our experience with ACAT and that is LOVE. Wow, from the CEO to the drivers and cooks, we were received with a spirit of enthusiasm and care. No request was to difficult or onerous…one of the Burundians loved the melamine crockery so much that ACAT went specially to buy him 8 melamine plates to take home…lol. Now we can understand why they receive so much success from God, because everything is done with a 100% no less love attitude and it is contagious!!

About the training…we were taught on sustainable development by identifying and building capacity into Extension Officers, Community Volunteers and guiding the local community to setup Community Governing Boards. Developing people in poverty by building capacity through training Basic Life Skills and Hard Skills, married to a follow-up program walking a road with our target group, towards discipling them to change their own lifestyles with an intentional focus on being Christ centered which will empower them to change their own circumstances, families, communities and infrastructures.

The foundation of the Basic life skills training is only the entry level training, ACAT has professionally developed 164 Modulated courses all geared towards a wholestic approach to helping people in poverty. More about the training in the next news letter.

During the training at Acat God expanded our Vision and downloaded additional strategy we need to implement in Burundi. We sense a challenge of God to embrace Luke 4:18. To be His instrument as Messengers of Hope to people in hopeless circumstances. Therefore in addition to our current mission we will initiate a development program in Burundi towards the poorest of the poor. We will play a mentorship role to others who attended the same training as well as to anyone who God raises up in Burundi wanting to break new ground in rural communities.

In our context the major felt need is Poverty, a problem which have left many aid and NGO organizations with hands in the air with despair because no amount of money will change people, only a Christ centered development journey will set people free step by step. Jesus is the “glue”…He holds all things together (Col 1:17) in and through Him this curse can be broken. Together Diane and I will spearhead this initiative in order to answer the call of the hopeless, to allow Christ to restore dignity and hope.

Ministry progress…

1. Veritas - We continue to train Module 2 with our pastor groups in Gitega and Rutana provinces. We are so grateful to the pastors for persevering with the training. Interpreting the Word of God correctly will result in the correct Gospel being preached, a Gospel of Hope and it will bring change to people and their circumstances.

On a visit to Ps Zacheria, attending the training faithfully, walking a distance of about 20 kms, He testified how the Veritas training have benefited him, the leaders and church. Being so thankful we enjoyed with him a meal in his home. He has also implemented ACAT and FGW principals and had a bumper crop this season, see picture attached.

We will continue the training with Module 2 in Ngozi and Kirundo provinces from September. The training in these remote areas requires additional finance for traveling, accommodation and books. We would need to raise additional finance for September to January as follow:

50 Books - $300 or R2400 (once off amount)

Accommodation - $215 or R1720 per month

Feul - $143 or R1144 per month

We will start with the Kirundi translation of Module 3 during August and we trusting God for provision for $500 or R4000 (once off) to complete this work, which will benefit all future training of this Module in Burundi.

Veritas Directors, Ivan Skinner and David de Wet, will visit us again during October to train facilitators on Module 1 and 2.

2. Children ministry - Saturday school is going well, Diane loves the children who come from the surrounding community, many who would not normally attend a Sunday church service. They colour in pictures, make crafts and play games and receive teaching about the Bible.

Sunday school teacher training was again held in March and we sent 16 teachers for training, this will help the Sunday school teachers to train the children about Jesus Christ.

3. Farming God’s Way (FGW) –

Carl Schmidt from FGW visited u

s in February and trained in Ngozi and Gitega provinces. Diane continues to use FGW as a tool to bring relief in a practical way.

Carl will visit us again in August and we will do refresher courses in Gitega and start new training in Rutana province.

Hauge Internet cafe and Development Centre progress...

The Hauge Internet business has been operational now for 7 months. Although we had to deal with a few

teething problems relating to record keeping, daily running of this small business and connection problems during March and April, we however do consider this initiative to be a blessing. A blessing both to us and the community of Gitega, because of the improved connection we are currently experiencing as well as the fact that the busines

s serves as a plat form to build capacity into people through imparting skills on how to browse the internet, how to email and run

Facebook accounts.

In addition the Hauge Internet has been one of the building blocks to establishing the Hauge Skills Development Centre, which will be the vehicle to accomplish the vision to help develop the rural poor. We have plans to expand HSDC with an additional classroom, chicken shed and water tanks and gutters to harvest water for the vegetable gardens.

However we first need to register a Non Profit Association in Burundi in order to give us a legal entity to partner with donors abroad. The cost for the registration process via a legitimate lawyer will be $400 or R3200.

Spiritual thought.....Messengers of Hope

Rom 5:3-5

“Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (ESV)

Paul encourages the Roman believers to rejoice, to be glad to take courage to enthuse themselves with the knowledge that they have an expectation that Jesus Christ is coming again. He calls this expectation, hope. He explains that the suffering that they are facing can be used by God through His Holy Spirit, to their advantage to build their endurance or perseverance to keep on going and believing and trusting in Christ, because He is their deliverer and provider. This perseverance will cause their character to grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ, which is shaped by their trails and circumstances.

In 1 Cor 13:13 Paul gives the bottom line to believers, Faith, Hope and Love. Faith refers to what we believe in i.e. Jesus Christ. Hope refers to our expectation of the return of Jesus Christ in whom our redemption is sealed. Finally Love, how we should respond to life’s sufferings and circumstances, how we should behave if we understand our Faith and Hope.

God has your back!! Someone need to hear this very loudly and clearly. Son or Daughter of God…He has your back!! i.e. God desire us to know, to believe, to live with the understanding that He loves us so much…and yes He proved it (Rom 5:8) on the cross, that you and should completely trust and believe Him with our lives, our spouses, children, businesses, jobs, communities etc. He will come through for those who will dare to follow His Holy Spirit. Therefore let us live our lives desiring God’s thoughts, passions, dreams and perspective. Let us desire to share the love of God in this life, allowing our decisions and life resources to serve Him as our Hope draws near.

We pray Jesus that you will credit to the account of every supporter their gifts to this ministry in any which way it has been made, God bless them and their families and their gift which is a testimony to your goodness and faithfulness, we ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen!

Prayer points:


Please continue to pray as follow:

1. Peace for Burundi – pray for continued political stability in the country. The security has been compromised by a small band of people who seek to bring instability.

2. Pray for Bernice – studies 2012, final year.

3. Pray for us – protection for our health, relationships, that no weapon from the enemy against us will prevail.

4. Divine appoints – ask the Holy Spirit to guide us into all divine appointments He has created for us and to discern His words of wisdom.

5. Veritas Training – Thank God for His divine provision, also pray for ongoing provision for the books required.

6. ACAT & FGW training – for implementation.

7. Kirundi Commentaries and Bibles – pray for more funding for this need as well as for Bibles, as there is no Bibles available in the country at the moment.

8. Hauge Skills Development Centre – for registration of NPA.
